General Questions






What is Xen?
Xen is a virtualisation technology for x86 processors, that supports the execution of multiple operating systems on a single hardware platform. Each virtual server on a Xen host, operates with close to native performance, making Xen the fastest and most secure server virtualisation technology available today. Xen was developed by the University of Cambridge and is supported by all major hardware venderos including Intel, AMD, Cisco, Dell, HP, Redhat etc.

How quickly can my server be set up?
Your Xen server will be up and running within 24 hours of processing your payment. For some operating systems, like debian, your server may be up & running within 15 mins of placing the order if auto-setup is enabled. We will let you know as soon as your server is ready to go.

What operating systems can I use?
Please see our list of supported operating systems If there's a particular OS you would like to use that is not on the list, email us and we will see what we can do!

Can I use FreeBSD or OpenBSD as my operating system?
We do not currently offer FreeBSD or OpenBSD, but we do offer NetBSD.

Can I use Windows as my operating system?
No, we do not offer any plans based on the windows operating system.

Can I upgrade RAM or disk space later?
Yes, of course. If your demand increases and you need more RAM or disk space, just let us know and we can upgrade you to a different plan. Upgrading is simple and painless!

Can I get more than one IP address?
Yes, no problem. Extra IP's are available at €2/month, or €24/year.
Due to technical limits within Xen there is a limit of 3 IP addresses per server.

Do you offer IPv6 addresses?
We do not currently offer IPv6, but this changes from time to time. Ask for more details.

What network connectivity is there?
All our servers are connected directly to high speed multiple Tier-1 network backbones, including Global Crossing and Level3. Our data centres are fully Cisco powered and designed with fault tolerant network topographies, which can reroute traffic in any fault situation.

Is there power backup?
Yes, of course. All our servers are housed in data centre's with n+1 redundancy in terms of power with diesel backup generators.

Where are the servers located?
XenPlanet is located in Dubin, Ireland which is where are primary servers are based. We also have globally distributed servers located servers in Atlanta (United States) and Singapore (Singapore).

Is there a discount for Open Source developers?
Yes. If you are a developer of an open source software package, we will give you a 10% discount. Contact support with details of your project (including URL) and we will send you a coupon for the discount.

Are there any limitations what I can do with my server?
Yes, just a few. We do not permit the use of our servers for sending spam, running IRC servers, or hosting pornographic or illegal content. Please check the Terms of Service for complete details.

Do you offer DNS services?
Yes, we offer free DNS services to all our customers. You can either run DNS on your own server, or take advantage of our globally distributed DNS servers. Contact support for further information.

Do you offer DNS or MX backups?
Yes, we can offer you DNS backups for free.
MX backups are not that useful anymore and so we do not offer it as a service.

Is my Xen server backed up?
Yes, your Xen server is backed up weekly, every sunday. We keep backups for four weeks.

Is my server firewalled?
We do not firewall any ports to your server. We recommend that you run your own local firewall, and only permit access to a limited number of services running on your machine (HTTP, SMTP etc). If you need advice on setting up a firewall, please contact support.

Can you help me install software?
Yes, of course. We're on hand to assist you with getting your server working the way you need it to. Contact support for assistance.
